Rain on its way to the Los Angeles area will be a welcome relief to firefighters still battling multiple catastrophic wildfires, but officials warned Sunday that flash floods and potential debris flows could be the trade-off.

There are new concerns in Southern California in the aftermath of the deadly wildfires with residents on alert for mudslides and floods as L.A. County endures its first rainstorm of the season. TODAY’s Al Roker tracks the latest forecast.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch effective from 4 p.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Monday for areas in or near burn scars created by the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Hughes Fire and Bridge Fire, the latter blaze of which burned 56,000 acres last fall.

There is a 10% to 20% chance of flash flooding and landslides in some recently burned areas of Los Angeles County, forecasters say, including the Palisades and Eaton fire areas.

The fires are still not fully contained and have killed 28 people and damaged or destroyed nearly 16,000 structures.

Jan. 27 A new wildfire was reported today at 9:30 a.m. in Los Angeles County. The wildfire has been burning on private land. At this time, the containment status is unknown and the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
