Sanjay Roy has been convicted of rape and murder of an RG Kar postgraduate trainee doctor by the Sealdah CBI court in Kolkata.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will file an appeal before the Calcutta High Court, requesting the death sentence for Sanjay Roy. Roy, who was sentenced to "life imprisonment until death" by a Sealdah court,

Judge Anirban Das said crime did not fall under “rarest of the rare” category as justification for not giving death penalty to Sanjay Roy.

Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment in the RG Kar rape and murder case. A lawyer, appearing on behalf of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has sought capital punishment for convict Sanjay Roy.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government's plea before the Calcutta High Court against the life imprisonment awarded to civic volunteer Sanjay Roy by a CBI court, the accused in the horrific RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case.

Sanjay Roy, the convict in the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, will initially work as a gardener at the Presidency Correctional Home. Later, he will be trained for other jobs like tailoring and carpentry.

The trail court had sought death penalty for Sanjay Roy but was turned down by the trail court, where Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das said that the crime did not fall under the ‘rarest of the rare’ category.

The Bengal government has moved a division bench to file an appeal for the death penalty for the convict, Sanjay Roy, in the RG Kar rape-murder case.
