Punxsutawney Phil may soon be out of a job—if PETA has its way. The animal rights organization sent a letter on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, urging the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to retire its famed groundhog to a sanctuary and replace him with a vegan “Weather Reveal” cake.

PETA has requested that a cake be used for Groundhog Day rather than Punxsutawney Phil - the groundhog typically used to determine whether February will be longer or shorter. The famed animal rights association has written to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club,

PETA has suggested that Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who predicts whether winter will go on for six more weeks or spring will arrive early, should be replaced with a vegan 'weather reveal' cake on Groundhog Day.

PETA announced that it has offered the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club a free vegan cake every year if it allows Punxsutawney Phil to retire.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, suggested that Groundhog Day be celebrated with a “weather cake” instead of pulling Punxsutawney Phil from his burrow to determine if winter will be prolonged or if spring will come early.

In a Tuesday letter addressed to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s president Tom Dunkel, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk is offering a "weather reveal" vegan cake each Groundhog Day in order to "replace [the] exploited groundhog.

Let them eat cake? People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, also known as PETA, believes it has a sweet deal for the people near Gobbler’s Knob, home to Punxsutawney Phil.
