"It's called 'black ice' because it tends to look like the rest of the pavement on the road, although in reality, it's actually clear," the US Forest Service notes. "Black ice forms without creating bubbles, which allows it to blend in with any surface it forms over. Black ice is dangerous precisely because it's hard to detect."

Southeast Texas is under its first-ever blizzard warning – one that reaches from the Golden Triangle, which includes Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange, out east into Louisiana, home to what is normally one of the busiest throughways in all of Texas, Interstate 10.

According to Operations Messages on the ERCOT website, around 5 a.m. ERCOT issued a Transmission Emergency in South and Southeast Texas.

Just before 5:30 p.m., the NWS in Houston posted a graphic detailing the snowfalls for parts of Southeast Texas. Houston, Anahuac, and Liberty have seen the most snowfall with three to four inches so far. Sugar Land received two to three inches of snowfall.

The watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon. Heavy accumulations of sleet and snow are possible.
